THE HAFENCITY IS ALIVE!

After around two years of construction and more than five years in the planning, an exceptional hotel concept has been opened in September 2019. It’s not just the HafenCity that is enhanced with a lively venue. The hotel wants to attract everyone in Hamburg, and offer not just suitable accommodation for hotel guests, but also the right combination of hospitality and entertainment for neighbours, people from Hamburg and visitors from all over the world. This all-round experience is the focus of the hotel, which stands out from other hotels from the first glance. The PIERDREI offers 212 rooms in five categories, ranging from small to extra large, a theatre, a cinema, a shop and much more, all under one roof.

 Kai Hollmann:

“The concept of PIERDREI is simple: We are delivering first-class design and a loving narrative at extremely fair prices. This can not only be felt in each of our 212 rooms, but in all of the public areas too. We want to create a place full of life. Not only for guests from Germany and abroad, but also for Hamburg and everyone who lives here.”

Adventurous types, for example, can get away from it all at “CAMPER CITY” seven metres up on the first floor and get comfortable in one of the classic caravans. It’s perfect for lovers of the outdoors who don’t want to miss out on the city and, instead of looking up at the stars, prefer to gaze at the city lights and listen to the sounds of the harbour.

Frederik Braun:

“An affection for special places and creative pastimes are the things that unite us all. And the PIERDREI will certainly not be lacking in this. I personally am particularly looking forward to our natural roof garden with a wonderful view of the city and our raised-level campsite. We’ve bought some iconic caravans for it, which await curious guests 7 metres up.”

The best cuisines from around the world are brought together under one roof at “KITCHENS”, the restaurant and bar area on the ground floor. Inspired by the most interesting restaurants, street food and bars in the world, this is where exceptional dishes and drinks are served, along with their entertaining history. If you prefer a cocktail with a spectacular view, take the lift up to “MOON 46”, the roof garden, which gets its name from the newly-created address in the so-called KPTN district: Am Sandtorkai 46.

Sebastian Drechsler:

“The HafenCity is a place which is still unfamiliar to many people from Hamburg, or at least one they haven’t fallen in love with yet. This makes having an outstanding concept from the start even more important. With Kitchens, we are creating a place where we bring the best flavours from around the world together in Hamburg. A restaurant for those who like to discover new things, not in an ostentatious way, but with a great atmosphere and fascinating characters. A place which will breathe life into the HafenCity.”

If you’re looking for more inspiration, visit the HAFENBÜHNE theatre. Everything in the world of entertainment takes place here, from concerts and stand-up comedy to small in-house productions. This could also include readings, the screening of the Champions League final or press conferences, and you can also hire out the entire HAFENBÜHNE as a conference or event venue.

Norbert Aust:

“With the Hafenbühne, we have created a sort of alternative to the classic theatre. The action doesn’t take place above the visitor’s heads, but all around them. In this way, the guest is always at the centre of the action. It’s a very special atmosphere, whether you’re watching an acoustic concert or a live broadcast. We are especially targeting young people in Hamburg with this concept.”

There is even a specially-designated area in the hotel for children and young people, the “RACKER ROOM”, which boasts 200 square metres crammed full with inspiration for guests from the age of 4 upwards. From the concierge lounge to the chill-out area, from the table football to the PlayStation, from the climbing wall to the fairy-tale cave.

Gerrit Braun:

“Children and young people tend get a raw deal in many hotels and find themselves bored with nothing to do if their parents want to have a nice evening. That won’t happen at our hotel... After all, we’re still big kids ourselves and know how to make sure they enjoy themselves!”

And if this isn’t enough for you, we’d recommend a visit to the Astor Film Lounge, the unique premium cinematic experience with seat service and legendary row spacing. 440 seats divided between three auditoriums are operated by Hamburg entrepreneur Hans Joachim Flebbe under the same roof as the PIERDREI.

At “DREICYCLE”, you can hire anything with wheels, exclusively for hotel guests. In the hotel-owned shop “PIERTHINGS”, on the other hand, you won’t find the typical Hamburg souvenirs, but lovingly crafted, specially designed and extremely stylish items that you won’t see anywhere else.

No one will feel excluded, whatever their reason for visiting the HafenCity and the PIERDREI. Solo travellers who simply wish to drift around, families with children who want both peace and quiet and comprehensive childcare, business travellers living in the new HafenCity district and/or wanting to attend a conference with up to 100 people and, most of all, anyone from Hamburg itself are equally welcome and receive specially-tailored offers just for them.

Just how a single hotel can be crammed full of so many creative ideas and concepts can finally be explained by looking at the people who run it, who, on the one hand, couldn’t be more different, but on the other hand have unleashed unimagined synergies.

Alongside hotelier Kai Hollman, whose 25hours Hotels have had a significant impact on the market for design hotels and who has created nothing less than a new type of hotel, are theatre legend Norbert Aust of Schmidts Tivoli on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn and the Braun brothers and Sebastian Drechsler of Miniatur Wunderland, the ultimate tourist attraction in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt warehouse district, which sees more than 1.4 million visitors a year.

For those involved, it wasn’t simply a case of wanting to run another hotel, but rather a project close to their hearts... Creating a venue different to all those that have gone before it and that can’t be replicated. The HafenCity may still be unfamiliar to many people, even those from Hamburg and it may lack a buzz here and there. But it has long been one of the most significant centres of interest in the city, not least because of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and other tourist attractions.

The PIERDREI Hotel HafenCity Hamburg has the potential to become nothing less than a living heartbeat of this new, emerging district of the city.
