UNIQUE, PLAYFUL AND IN THE BEST LOCATION

Hamburg; Hanseatic city, gateway to the world and a land of adventure for urban tourists! Around seven million people visit Hamburg every year. HafenCity in particular is one of the absolute visitor magnets. There is always something going on at the harbor: The Elbphilharmonie and musical stages are located here. In addition, there are the Landungsbrücken, the fish market and the Miniatur Wunderland.

Last but not least, you can admire the world's largest warehouse complex: We are referring to Speicherstadt, which is just a two-minute walk from Hotel PIERDREI. Honestly, the location could not be any better!

A brief history of the Hamburg Speicherstadt

The Speicherstadt was already an impressive sight when it was built more than a hundred years ago, and in 2015 it was even made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A lot happened in the meantime. Originally, the Speicherstadt functioned as a free trade port. Here, goods could be stored, refined and processed duty-free even after Hamburg's annexation to the newly founded German Reich. It was completed in 1923, just in time for the beginning of the Golden Twenties, and served primarily as a trading centre for spices, coffee, tea and cocoa. While the world's largest warehouse complex survived the First World War without damage, about 50 % of the building stock fell victim to the bombs of the Second World War.

The Speicherstadt in today's HafenCity

Most of the buildings in the Speicherstadt were rebuilt in the post-war years and have reappeared in their characteristic redbrick Gothic style, as, indeed, has the PIERDREI. However, the Speicherstadt increasingly lost its significance as a free port until the abolition of the customs border in 2013 eventually paved the way for its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, the warehouse complex of the Speicherstadt is used for various purposes. Restaurants have settled here, the Miniatur Wunderland is located here and a number of exciting museums refer to the illustrious past of Hamburg's free port era.
