EVENTS IN THE SUMMER OF 2023

The days are getting longer, the temperatures are rising and Hamburg's sky is once again shining blue instead of gray - summer is slowly coming to the north. To make sure you can enjoy this summer in Hamburg with all its facets and not miss anything, we have put together a fine selection of events for the months of May to September.

From art lovers to sports enthusiasts to music lovers - there is guaranteed to be something for everyone here. 

 

 

MAY

 

Hamburg Port Anniversary from 05 - 07 May at the Port of Hamburg

The 834th Port Anniversary is a must for all fans of the most beautiful city in the world with its impressive arrival and departure parades and the colorful land program. The highlight of the weekend is the grand fireworks display over the Elbe on May 6.

 

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival on May 19 at the Außenalster

For more than 50 years, Hamburg's Japanese community has thanked the Hanseatic city for its hospitality with the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. The highlight of the festival is the fireworks display on the Außenalster.

 

Harley Days from May 19 - 21 at Grossmarkt

On Ascension Day weekend, Hamburg becomes a biker city. A parade and various music acts will make the hearts of all Harley fans beat faster. 

 

 

JUNE

 

Short Film Festival Hamburg 06 - 11 June

Under this year's motto "NOW!", more than 400 films dealing with the urgency of the present and current issues will be shown throughout Hamburg. The program features films that are loud and sparkling, quiet and poetic or wild and level-headed.

 

Elbjazz Festival on June 9 + 10 at the Port of Hamburg

As one of the largest, European jazz festivals, the Elbjazz Festival offers both indoor and outdoor concerts. Around 50 program points on a total of nine stages await all jazz enthusiasts or those who want to become one.

 

Altonale from 16 June - 02 July in Altona and Ottensen

In June, various locations in Altona are transformed into an extraordinary cultural festival. There is a variety of events: from theatre performances to art exhibitions, literature, film and music, there is a lot to discover. 

 

 

JULY

 

Schlagermove July 07 - 08, start and finish: Heiligengeistfeld, St. Pauli

At this festival, music fans dressed up in garish costumes celebrate Schlager. The highlight is the "Move", a parade of colorful music trucks queering through St. Pauli and along the harbor, accompanied of course by thousands of dancing Schlager fans.

 

Millerntor Gallery #11 from July 13-16 at Millerntor Stadium, St. Pauli

The international art, music and culture festival, founded by Viva con Agua and FC Sankt Pauli, creates an open platform for dialogue and exchange. Works of art of all genres turn visitors into participants in social change processes.

 

Hamburg Pride from 26 July - 06 August in the city center

During the PRIDE time, Hamburg is transformed into a colourful rainbow city as a sign of acceptance, fairness and equality. There are numerous events in St. Georg and around the Binnenalster. The motto this year is "Self-determination now! Allied against trans* hostility". Hamburg Pride ends on 05 August with the colourful CSD parade, where really everybody is welcome. It starts at 12:00 at the end of the Lange Reihe. 

 

 

AUGUST

 

MS Dockville from August 18 - 20 in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg

MS Dockville is an art and music festival in the midst of the Elbe scenery and industrial flair without a fixed genre. Here, renowned artists and newcomers gather and offer not only music but also workshops, readings and, above all, many new inspirations to their visitors.

 

Hamburg Cyclassics on August 20

The cycling event par excellence! On August 20, Hamburg will get on its bike and cycle through the city. Therefore, a large part of the city will be closed to car traffic on this day. On foot, however, you can watch the exciting event super close.

 

Hamburger Kultursommer from 25 August - 09 September at the Trabrennbahn, Bahrenfeld

Once a year, renowned bands and musicians meet at the Bahrenfeld Trabrennbahn, a former harness racing track, as part of the Hamburger Kultursommer. Here the stars come together and entertain their audience. 

 

 

SEPTEMBER

 

Filmfest Hamburg from 28 September - 07 October

According to the motto "Filmfest for everyone - everywhere in Hamburg", a program of numerous films is shown in various cinemas. National and international films and the "Michel Kinder und Jugend Filmfest", a film festival for kids and teens, invite visitors of all ages.

 

Reeperbahnfestival from September 20 – 23

In the middle of Hamburg's wildest street and in various venues, the Reeperbahnfestival will take place this weekend with a diverse line-up and colourful program. Here, numerous artists from different genres are waiting to carry away visitors.

 

Hamburg Theatre Night - September (exact date to be announced)

Every year, around 40 theatres in the city open the new season with a joint bang! For one night in September, theatre enthusiasts can once again experience the diversity of Hamburg's theatre scene. There are exclusive insights into upcoming productions or excerpts from popular productions. Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover theatre behind the scenes.

 

 

OTHER EVENTS

 

50 Years of Sesame Street from February 17 - September 30 at the Ballinstadt Emigrant Museum

An intergenerational experience for all people who grew up with Sesame Street. Among other things, objects, props and costumes from the last 50 years of Sesame Street will be on display. Visitors experience the moving story behind the TV show and for the little ones there is a scavenger hunt and lots of hands-on stations.

 

Water light concerts from May 1 - the end of September in Planten un Blomen

The perfect end to a beautiful summer day. A concert where the music is accompanied by colourfully lit water fountains. The fascinating show takes place every evening from 10 pm at the Parksee.

 

Summer Dome from July 21 - August 20 on the Heiligengeistfeld

From Ferris wheels and ghost trains to french fries and lard cakes, the largest folk festival in the north leaves nothing to be desired (tip: Wednesday is family day, here all rides are a little cheaper).

 

Late riser flea market on Überseeboulevard

Perfect for those who like to lie in on the weekend. Sleep in, have a delicious breakfast and then head off to collect treasures just around the corner. Every last Saturday of the month, 11 am - 4 pm.
